I don't have the books with me, but I think his real name is Augustus.  The Prophet calling him "Algernon" was simply another example of the high calibre journalism the Rita Skeeter and her colleagues are capable of. 

This is the same paper that caller Arthur Weasly "Arnold" and just think of the errors in the stories about Harry in GoF.
