Ooooh, I can't let this one go without response!  Sirius didn't ASK 
for a second chance of DD!  

Yes, I do wonder why DD (especially as a legillimens) never saw fit 
to request a visit with Sirius in Azkaban, but he did not realize 
there was a reason to believe in Sirius' innocence, and so that's the 
end of my "criticism" of DD over Sirius.  So IMO it's not that DD 
didn't *give* Sirius a second chance so much as he didn't realize 
Sirius wanted or needed one.

And do remember that, once the truth was out, DD quickly brought 
Sirius back into the fold, as a fully trusted member of The Order.
