La Gatta Lucianese:

Odd, in GoF.37, even though he has witnessed Cedric Diggory's death,
Harry sees "the horseless carriages that were trundling up the drive"
(well, the exact wording is, "Hermione turned away, smiling at the
horseless carriages...", but since the point of view is Harry's, we
can assume that he too is seeing horseless carriages; at least he
expresses none of the shock he later does at seeing what is pulling
the carriages). It isn't until OotF that Harry is actually able to see
the thestrals.

So, my question is, does it take a while for thestral-seeing to set
in, or did JKR drop a byte in there somewhere? ;D
