Yes Snape doesn't go around cursing his students, but I think that there is a distinction between loathing someone, and hating them with all of your being. Snape loathes Harry, he can't stand Nevile, but to say that he utterly despises them will all of his existence, well that is pushing it a little. So, as it does take some self control, I am sure, not to hurt them a little more than verbally, I doubt that it is an internal struggle for him. Regarding his actions towards Sirius, you can clearly see his demise towards him. He can not control his anger to even be civil towards Sirius. My point was,we now know that Moody/Crouch hated Harry, but it was not as transparent as Snape's hatred towards Sirius. He controlled himself a lot better, because he knew what the long term goal was to be. It took great discipline for Moody/Crouch, and I think that he preformed masterfully.
