Pippin:
Animagi are supposed to be rare, which makes the whole thing 
sound  only slightly less fantastic than Sirius disguising himself 
as a potted plant. In order to be taken, er, seriously, Lupin would 
have had to explain how he knew and why he had waited twelve 
years to mention it. Much simpler to call the Dementors on Sirius 
himself.
