As always, Pippin, you do a fantastic job of distillation.  I think 
this is the question.  And for me, I think the answer is, "Yes to the 
extent that we see his demons & faults, but *not* to the extent of 
Lupin's being fully ESE!"  

If, for instance, Lupin were so dark, so "bad" as to be Sirius' 
murderer [for purely selfish reasons, right?], it would speak to more 
than a dark side of a nice person; I think it would move him 
altogether from the category of nice people, of one of her favorites.
