It's an interesting image because of the value-neutral description.
A plant doesn't do well in the shade because the shade hates it; it
just lacks what it needs to grow and develop. Put it in the sun and
it will flourish, not because the sun loves or approves of it, but
because it will provide the necessary nutrients the plant needs.
Had Snape had a few different or better breaks in his earlier life,
he might have ended up a different organism.
