We don't know if he was not called Snivelus in school. Potter Sr. 
and Sirius did call him thus, but surely they were biased? It is 
pretty much like Malfoy Jr. and Co parading about Hogwarts 
with "Potter stinks" budges. It the pensive episode he doesn't come 
across as a snivelling and grovelling coward.
