Know what? I agree this is a highly interesting episode but do we 
really know what it WAS all about? What Harry heard was a snippet of 
a conversation, and even this snippet he didn't hear properly (an 
owl conveniently hooted at the most interesting moment). Harry 
concluded that Snape was after the Stone and frankly it did sound 
that way. If Voldemort regarded Snape as another aspirant for the 
Stone it's hardly disqualify him as a spy. LV entertains no 
illusions concerning his followers' faithfulness and greed.
