What about the possibility that Molly is embarrassed that she can't 
afford better?  Speaking as a parent meself, I know there are times 
when it's not exactly fun to have to reveal to your children that 
you CAN'T do something/buy something because there simply aren't 
means.  On a *good* day, you might find a way to openly discuss this 
with the kids so they can learn something from it.  On a 
*different,* not-so-good day, you might just look away and tersely 
avoid admission that you weren't able to do better.

Ron did let her have it a bit, and that may have contributed to her 
embarrassment.  If he'd reacted differently, maybe she'd have been 
less humiliated and been more inclined to have considered the 
possibility of mending them.
