Snape's loyalty to Dumbledore

We keep hearing over and over that Dumbledore trusts
Snape and various arguments have been put forth to
exlain why this is so. I think the answer was revealed
in the pensieve, Lily defending Snape. Perhaps this
was not the only time she did so and this was what
caused Snape to become a spy for Dumbledore. As we
know that Lily and James were fighting against
Voldemort and Snape was a spy prior to Godric's
Hollow.
