Which of these things do you value most highly, because you would 
probably go there.

There is an interview where JKR does talk about this question and 
she strongly hinted that the sorting hat puts you in the house that 
represents the virtue that you regard highestly.

Hence why Hermione is in Gryffindor, instead of Ravenclaw.

I value intellect highly (Ravenclaw), and determination (Slytherin) 
and Patience (Hufflepuff) are also on my list but above all I 
treasure daring, nerve and chivalry, so I take that to say I am a 
natural Gryffindor.
