We care because it is going to be important!  Like it or not, Lily is important, and whatever it is will have some bearing on future events, we already know this of JKR.

As for Snape, I think that the debates on Snape says it all, we NEED to know!  Will it change things, only time will tell, but my opinion of Snape has been steadily changing with every new bit of cannon that comes my way!  Hopefully, this truth will settle the issue once and for all!  *begins praying*
