I agree that it doesn't make much sense. So I would have to guess that
either JKR made her wait that long because it wouldn't have worked
plot-wise to make her betray earlier, or there's something we don't
know or understand about Marrietta. The second solution is much more
interesting for me, but if I had to place a bet I would put it on the
first solution. I don't think Marrietta ever was anything more than a
plot device for JKR, so I don't think there's any real backstory to
explain why Marrietta waited for that long. I sure wish there were,
but JKR hasn't given us any kind of hint. Too bad.
