I don't think she manages to deliver this message in her books very
well at all. If she did, there wouldn't be any need for her to explain
and defend the characters. We would have no need for outside-the-books
comments. IMO, if an author has to clarify something in interviews,
that means that he/she did not do a good job of explaining that thing
in his/her book to start with.

I don't get a feeling that there are so many people here who feel
sorry for Marrietta or who understand Percy. And chances are that
there would be even less of us if we hadn't read a defense of those
characters on this or another similar board...
