Well, I see it like this: Someone must make a sacrifice, but is
afraid to do so. But love for the person the sacrifice must be made
for eliminates the fear, and what's left is the courage to make the
sacrifice. (If you want, you can read "Lily" instead of someone,
etc.)

But isn't LV's fear of death the basic motivation for everything he
feels and does? The other two are derivative, I think: he fears DD
and Harry because they may eliminate him.
