Tom Riddle did not plan to kill Myrtle she just happened to be 
hiding in the bathroom and opened the door when she heard tom's male 
voice. Then she died not because the basilisk was set on her but 
because it happened to be out of the chamber talking with Tom she 
met the eyes of it and died. Tom did not like muggleborns but he did 
not intend to kill Myrtle.
