Geoff:
The UK editions lack internal illustrations, which I believe are in 
the US versions and thus tend to have a lower page count. The usual 
UK OOTP edition runs to 766 pages.

I think the publisher is also a guide. UK editions are from 
Bloomsbury, US from Scholastic(?) - US friends, please smack my 
wrists if I'm wrong on that.
