Arynn replies:
"I don't pretend to be an expert at fighting dementor, Harry...quite the contrary.." Lupin tells Harry on page 189 PoA. This suggests that he might not be too good himself.

I don't think he stopped giving the lessons. They mention them quite a few times:
1) "This meant that with Lupin's anti-dementor classes, <snip>, Harry just had one night a week to do all his homework." PoA Pg.243
2) "To make matters even worse, Harry's anti-dementor lessons were not going nearly as well as he had hoped..." PoA pg. 245

Dementor lessons started in January. In Feb. he was still having lessons. It was after one of these that he ran into McGonagall and she gave him his firebolt. The next day the team has their first practice with the firebolt, and two days later is the Ravenclaw Match.

Since they mention that Wood had them practicing five nights a week. This match must have been within four days of his last dementor lesson with Lupin. He didn't need them after that becuase it was at this match that he first produced a corporeal Patronus

1)After the game Lupin came up to him and said, "That was quite some Patronus" implying that it was impressive.
2) And at the end of the book Dumbledore says, "Prongs rode again last night... <snip> And I remembered the most unusual form your Patronus took, when it charged Mr. Malfoy down at your Quidditch match against Ravenclaw." Pg. 428 PoA.

A note on the Evil!Lupin theories:
This is also significant in that Dumbledore is telling Harry about how Remus has told him everything. I'm sure that that conversation involved quite a few apologies. So it would seem Lupin did "fess up" to his lies.

Plus, if he were working for Voldy, Remus would have know the whole time that Sirius was innocent, so if you're of the ESE!Lupin camp, you can't use his not telling about Black to prove he was out to harm Harry, 'cos he would have known Black was not a threat to Harry in the first place.
