This is a terrific theory, Steve. By sharing your weary ponderings 
you brought something to my mind I would like to share.

Imagine your scenario, right up til the moment Harry grabs Voldemort 
by the cloak and makes to pull him into the veil. 
Then imagine the hand of someone we know at the appearing suddenly 
at the point where the world meets the beyond, Sirius' Hand. as 
Voldemort falls Harry is held suspended between the two worlds. 
In this moment Harry is connected to Sirius' immortal soul and is 
transported to the other side in his mind where the scenes of his 
family and loved ones take place, then cue your ending.
