Don't you think you should allow for a third possibility: that 
you're misinterpreting both the text and JKR's intentions?

Renee:
I don't think it's possible to subvert an unfinished story. But it 
seems to me that being a conspiracy theorist when you're dealing 
with the mind of a single person instead of a RL riddle is a 
precarious position.
