I have a thought. I imagine they communicate in more than one way.
Floo, apparation, owl, protean charms, bewitching mirrors, and
mystery method. I imagine there are probably other ways we haven't
thought of yet. But she said it was a method requiring only a wand.
I am suggesting that a shower of sparks is another method requiring
only a wand. A shower of sparks would be controlled and each
pattern would have its own message. Like smoke signals, I suppose.
In Book 1 it said, "Viewers as far apart as Kent, Yorkshire, and
Dundee have been phoning in to tell me that instead of the rain I
promised, they've had a downpour of shooting stars!" US edition,
chapter 1.
In book 5, "Far, far above them, a shower of bright red sparks had
flared among the stars. Harry recognized them at once as wand
sparks." And the next paragraph reads,"'Second signal, let's go!'
said Lupin loudly, as more sparks, green this time, exploded high
above them." US edition, hardcover, chapter 3, page 55.
