Tonks now:
I like your point too. We could combine theories and say that Snape 
took any memory that he had that he had not resolved his emotions 
about into the pensive. Any emotion of hate, fear, anger would 
arouse LV.  Otherwise LV would not notice.  Harry is aware when LV 
is angry, or I think there was one time when he was pleased about 
something. So it seems that emotions are an important key here. 
Maybe there were other, good emotions in the pensive too that we 
didn't see. So it could be that, as you say, Snape took the memories 
out so as not to arouse the suspicion of LV.
