In the case of the Occlumency lessons that was easy because the
feeling Harry was feeling in his gut was literal not figurative; they
actually made him sick as well as weak. I don't know about you but I
would need a very good reason to continue doing something like that; 
"because I said so" just wouldn't do it for me.
