Actually Neville was redeemed from any wrongdoing... Peter stole the 
passwords.  It's true Neville had written them down, but he hadn't left 
them hanging around carelessly, which is what he was maligned for.

Sherry nit picking even more:
Actually, it was Crookshanks who stole the passwords, not Peter.
Crookshanks stole them and gave tem to Sirius.
