Ha, you beat me to it.  I think the difficulty of the
concept is why they added several events to the movie
version of POA - the thrown rock, Hermione doing the
werewolf call - which make clear that the
time-travelers are *already present* the first time
through, in order to help viewers understand what
happens with the Patronus.
