Just as Harry's mother imbued him with the protection of her blood, 
perhaps the Longbottoms tried to instill a similar protection for 
Neville?  (which brings up the whole "who knew about the Prophecy" 
question again)  In that case, maybe the Lestrange's attack on the 
Longbottoms has something to do with this spell, maybe even deflecting 
the protection of the spell onto Voldemort?  Very far-fetched, I know, 
but seriously, could Voldemort have received a protection spell from 
someone--anyone?  Or "stolen" someone else's protection?

Before the end of GoF, that is.
