Monster? of course James would be a monster if he was in a 
warewolf's body.

Lupin had a hard time fitting in till 3 good friends risked 
themselves as illegal animagi to help him live with his monthly 
transformation.

Now imagine trying to raise a baby with that problem. The Dursleys 
(spied on by OOTP members) would be a safer, although not more 
loving, option.

I don't give much chance for that theory being true if JKR 
said "thanx but no thanx", but I can understand why those friends 
left Harry with the Dursley for so long.

Lupin may give Harry a love bite at the worse possible time

Peter was dead (in OOTP eyes)
James was dead
