What if by drinking the potion and then the water the inferi were 
floating in he was dead? Not dying, but dead. Animated and aware, but 
dead all the same. Maybe a wizard!zombie!!Dumbledore that Snape 
recognized and knew he had to finish to spare Dumbledore one of those 
existences worse than death.
Sounds far fetched now that I've written it down....
