Crouch Jr. probably kept Moody alive in order to extract information
that only Moody would know. If Crouch had to convincingly impersonate
Moody, he would have to know enough about Moody to avoid
suspicion---which he apparently did, because Crouch Jr. even fooled
Dumbledore.
