Thanks for running down that quote.  I don't think impromtu answers 
in an interview convey a writer's true feelings about a character as 
much what s/he writes in the book.

In some ways Snape is a deeply horrible person, but that is not the 
same as being evil.  All spys are horrible because of what they must 
do, but they are not all traitors.  We get a glimpse of the web of 
lies into which Snape has woven himself in "Spinners End" (Loved that 
title!)
