I think, though, that the point that CathyD is making is that
Voldemort *already knows* that one of his Horcruxes (the Diary) has
been destroyed. So unless he replaces that one, he will *not* have the
important number, seven.
Why would he not replace it? Is it more important to have *created*
exactly six Horcruxes (to his soul divided by seven), or to actually
have six Horcruxes (and therefore seven pieces of soul) *in
existance*?
