I have had the thought in passing a couple of times as well.  The ony 
ral think that devalues this theory in my mind is that we have seen the 
other horcruxes, and they do evil things.  They function as LV would 
want them to function... try to bring MORE evil into the world.  The 
sorting hat seems to be inherently good (or at the very least 
neutral).  It talks about working together and seems to be anti dark 
lord itself.
