I disagree slightly.  Sirius Black would have preferrred to, and did,
go out fighting.  Dumbledore was not an offensive fighter - Dumbledore
was a DEFENDER. Even when he fought Voldemort himself, Dumbledore
fought to constrain Voldemort and defend Harry, but not to kill
Voldemort or at least blast him out of his new body. 

And among the many things that Dumbledore accomplished with his death
was the one which was most important in his mind - to defend the
students in his care, both Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter.  

I believe Dumbledore died exactly as he would have wished - giving his
life in the defense of his students.
