It would never have happened.  Had Slughorn taken the potion a second 
time at the age of 57 in 1981, it would mean that he was born in 
1924, making him a contemporary of Voldemort (who was born in the 
late twenties to early thirties).  If that were true, Slughorn could 
not have been his professor, as he is shown in the Pensieve.
