I think that DD messed up when he got the ring - he wasn't aware, 
perhaps, of the power of a horcrux.   after all, Harry destroyed the 
Diary and he didn't get hurt from that.  Unless, of course, Harry is 
the only one that CAN destroy horcruxes.   Remember that DD stated if 
it wasn't for his skill & Snape's "timely action", he would be a dead 
man.
