Hey, I like this theory!  I think Tom Riddle was awarded the trophy 
for 'discovering' Hagrid had opened the Chamber of Secrets. Of course 
we know this was not true and it was TR who was the heir of 
Slytherin. So it would also tie in with the fact that LV (or Tom 
Riddle as he was then) would have to kill in order to make a horcrux, 
and in CoS it said that there were some deaths in the school when the 
Chamber was opened the first time, ie. by Tom Riddle. So that could 
fit, though strictly speaking it was the Basilisk that killed.
