Murder = splitting the soul?

I am interested by this take on murder in the books. I have a couple questions:
1. Does this count all murders? Even those done for a righteous reason? If so, Dumbledore and most of the members of the Order would have torn souls. Though, of course, the difference is that they did not create a horcrux to save it in.
2. Does self-defense count?
I wonder what readers who have committed a murder (you know there are some) thought about this judgement.
