First time poster here:

I always had a theory that SS was not evil
because it was DD who first recruited him NOT LV. This would explain his deep seated belief that Ss can be trusted. SS may not be a very likeable man and he has some deep physchological problems with Harry (because of James--and perhaps because of Lily-did he in fact deep feelings for her) and many other people. But being a rotten person does not make one evil. If DD had indeed recuited him as a mole and placed him ins LV's growing undergound movement it would explain the deep seated trust DD has in him (ss).

It reminds me of movies where someone goes deep undercover--a Wise guy perhaps? and whatever must be done to get information or keep the cover from being blown must be done. (think perhaps Fellicity Shagwell & Fat Bastard in "The spy who shagged me") This might alwo appeal to SS sense of self worth. Doing something sneaky and underhanded for a good cause?

Of course I had to stop thinking this when I found out that it was
Snape who heard the Prophecy and reported it to LV, but I am working
on a theory for that too.
