If Slughorn taught Lily potions, he must also have taught Snape, yet 
IIRC, there's no mention of interaction between them. Snape must have 
been an outstanding pupil, but perhaps not Slugclub material. Could 
Slughorn have discovered the book and 'confiscated' it either with or 
without Snape's knowledge?  This would explain why it turns up after 
Slughorn's return to Hogwarts.  If so, why leave it lying around-was 
Harry meant to find it? And who knows about the HBP?
