I think you're right, but I find it a bit weird. 
Lupin hates and fears the wolf.  He doesn't consider
it his "true self" at all.  Using it to represent him
as a Patronus seems a little more...problematic than
using someone's animagus form.  Still, it probably
doesn't mean anything.
