He lied. Just like he lied about not knowing Harry is a powerful wizard (parselmouth, patronus at 13, defeated LV again as QuirrellMort, defeated the basilisk/destroyed the diary). Just like he lied by omitting the fact that he actually saved Harry during the Quidditch match.
Others believe Snape lied when he said he knew what Draco's task was. That he used Legilimency to read Narcissa's fears while he was looking out the window.
