But we do have some information in addition to that.
Dumbledore, who is not exactly seeing the prank
through Snape's eyes, seems to think that James had
saved Snape's life. For that to happen, there had to
be a realistic (or maybe even certain?) life threat.

The Marauders (and their fans) can't have it both
ways: if James gets the glory of life-saving, then
Sirius must get the blame of putting that life into
the danger.
If there was no danger, there is no life-debt
obligation to James.
