I was ever so happy when I saw that JKR might be answering the 
question on the Order's communication method as it is one of the only 
debates I've got involved in in this group. There is some discussion 
of this starting with this post by Chancie suggesting kneazles:

Which sparked a debate about communication methods leading to whether 
or not the bird (as mentioned by BG) is always a phoenix or whether 
it may be a Patronus. Although I took the Patronus side, I'm still 
not sure either way... But I am sure that it is this bird that is the 
communication method of the Order.
