Very interesting.  I've had a though about this and it is that the 
secret is James' and Lily's.  They need someone to keep their secret 
for them: the secret keeper.  Therefore the subject/s of the secret 
cannot be their own secret keeper there needs to be a second or 
third person.

I can apply this to the secret keeper of the Order by saying that 
Dumbledore is not The Order, he is a member, or even the leader of, 
The Order but he is not The Order therefore he is able to be its 
(The Order's) secret keeper.

This made sense in my head, but I'm not sure that I've managed to 
articulate it properly!
