I always wondered about that line, too. Of course, it could mean
that being wizards, they used apparition or the floo network and did
not ride in cars. However, I wonder if they were studying ways to
become "immune" to the AK curse? That would have been invaluable in
the war with LV. Furthermore, that could explain the "ancient
magic" Lily used to protect Harry. How does this connect with the
gold? I dunno. Perhpas it is a direct connection with the Stone.
Perhaps it was "venture capital" or payment in advance but they were
killed before it was delivered? The exciting thing is I'm sure we
will find out!
