"You've been wondering whether I put you in the right house,"
"Yes...you were particularly difficult to place.  But I stand by what 
I said before"..."you would have done well in Slytherin-"

Harry takes off the hat and does not let the sorting hat finish his 
statement.  Like Sherry said Harry thought "not Slytherin" then the 
sorting hat questioned Harry about his choice. We may never know 
where the sorting hat would have placed Harry.
