Dina Lerret expresses quite a few people's opinion on Americanization of the text:
As an American, I'm not bothered by either the British or the
Americanization--I'm not some strict purist. {g} I think, if you
can *really* appreciate a work in one format and have the ability
to expand upon this interest (comprehension is key), purity is
irrelevant. For example, I can appreciate Shakespeare in its
original format but I also can enjoy the 'modernization' of it as
well.

The issue for me is that when I pick up a book I want the actual book written. If it has been abridged or adapted for use in any way I want that stated clearly on the edition. I don't think that was the case with PS/SS. Correct me if I am wrong, but if it does state in the book that the book has been edited for American language usage then it is not clear.
