Got away? No, he was doing exactly as told by Hagrid.
The danger has found him, for a change. And he would
have been completely and thoroughly dead if not for
Firenze.
If I remember Hagrid's advice, it was "stay on the
path and shoot red sparks if in danger". That would've
been really  helpful against a verewolf or any other
dangerous beasts in the forest.

And that's beside the point anyway. Even if they were
carefully watched and in no real danger, they didn't
know that, did they? So the potential for "emotional
scars" was still much greater than the infamous Trevor
episode or whatever Snape is usually charged with.
