I've thought about the reason LV didn't die that night at Godric's 
Hollow...I read an editorial recently (sorry, can't remember who 
wrote it) that said maybe Lily had saved LV at some point. If this 
is true maybe he became upset enough with her enough that he 
temporarily 'forgot' that he owed her a life debt.  Can this be the 
ancient magic? Maybe you have to save the person who saved you 
before you can kill them, otherwise the curse would backfire back 
to the person performing the curse.
